It seems that no matter how bad Tiger plays or if he even plays at all, he just cannot lose his number one rank. Both Lee Westwood and Phil Mickleson had golden opportunities to take the number one rank at Firestone. Since Westwood pulled out due to injury I guess he is off the hook this time. But Phil, “Mr. Choke Artist”, was at it again on the weekend at Firestone. I thought since he was now 40 and a multiple major winner he was done with his classic weekend blunders. He entered the weekend with a starting with a 66 and 68 on Thursday and Friday. Then he proceeded to shoot a 71 on Saturday which probably took him out of contention to win the tournament but he still had a chance to finish 4th and take the number 1 world ranking. Instead he finished tied for 46th with a 41 on the front 9 and a 78 (+8) total, which was worse than Tiger’s closing round. It just seems that more times than not when Phil is put on the grand stage he chokes.
It seems inevitable with the way Tiger is playing that either Phil or Westwood will take over #1 but not by their own doing – by Tiger’s undoing. Golf is really hurting right now, ratings are down, and it needs someone new to step up to the plate. I personally would love to see Rory McIlroy, Ricky Fowler, or Ricky Barnes start winning some big time tournaments, perhaps a major or two. Also Padraig Harrington, what happened to him? It seemed that when Tiger was out due to injury Harrington was the one to take over, winning two Open’s and a PGA from ’07-’08. No matter who it is golf needs someone new to step up, because a struggling Tiger at #1 is no longer bringing massive ratings.
