So far so good for the Cowboys

Well that’s two preseason games in the bag for the Cowboys and so far the engine seems to be running fine. Save for a few injuries the Boys look every bit the part for at least playoff contention and probably division supremacy.

Dallas did, however, lose tight end John Phillips for the season to an ACL injury. Though it may seem unimportant to some that a 3rd string tight end went out, the impact that the team will feel could be significant in the long run. Phillips is a great blocker and was progressing well as a pass receiver and having him opposite of Jason Witten would have been a great threat. Martellus Bennett is also not your ideal blocker and is more of a receiving threat, plus he is recovering from an ankle injury. That left Scott Sicko, an undrafted rookie with a lot of buzz surrounding him. Sicko got a concussion during the Cowboys first preseason game, but if Sicko can recover he could fill in for Phillips nicely at the position. If he cannot the Cowboys could suffer a bit at the power run game where they like using two tight end sets.

That is what is astounding though, is that the Cowboys are losing backups and they have depth that can fill in the role nicely. Phillips is out and Sicko could fill in nicely right behind Bennett. We know Bennett can play and during the short time Sicko played before getting hurt he looked solid at the position.

The one thing that worried most people was the kicker job with new kicker David Buehler. After the horrible shank that would put any kicker to shame during the Bengals preseason game he has been solid on field goals. It has only been two games, but there is a collective sigh of relief that the team, Buehler, and the fans have to be feeling right about now. Having stability at the kicking game is something the Cowboys are going to have to have going into the season this year.

The Cowboys defense looked great in these first two games as well with the first and second units shutting down the opposing offenses for the first 3 quarters in each game. They looked solid against both that pass and the run. Anthony Spencer is also looking like the player he was at the end of last season.

The offense for the Cowboys seems to have a little more of a spark to it that it did last season with Doug Free looking like the answer to the left tackle position. Roy Williams is running his routes well and Patrick Crayton is happy to be a Cowboy again.

With a few players yet to debut, the Cowboys are looking good and hopefully can continue playing well into the season. They still have a few players rehabbing that once healthy will only add more depth to a very deep team. So far it seems like all systems go for the Boys.
