A couple of weeks ago, the Astros decided to start rebuilding, trading Roy Oswalt to Philly for J.A.Happ and prospects. Then they traded Lance Berkman to the Yankees for more prospects.
In four starts Happ (in my opinion) has showed ace potential. His stikeouts per nine innings is 8.38 which is second behind Bud Norris (9.75) amongst Astros starters and a tad better than what Roy Oswalt has done this year. Not to mention, Happ is younger and cheaper than Roy.
Brett Wallace (hitting .270 in 37 at bats with 5 rbi) and Mark Melancon (1 inning 2 strikeouts and 1 hold) are two of the prospects the Astros accuired and they look pretty good, just really young.
The biggest move made by the Astros this summer was bringing in Jeff Bagwell as the new hitting coach. Not only is going to help the young hitters like Brett Wallace but having him in the clubhouse every day is going to be a huge lift for the whole team.
So, we may have lost a couple of long-time and fan favorite Astros, we’ve gotten younger and cut down on salaries which well be big in the future. I think the Astros have improved big time.
