Addressing Savard For Regher

The rumors just won’t go away on this deal. I imagine that is because from a hockey standpoint it makes sense for both teams. Calgary would get the true #1 center they have been looking for for at least a decade. While the Boston Bruins would get one of the best shut down D in the league to load up their back end. Also their cap hits are pretty much identical.

I won’t speak too much on the Boston side of things but I suspect they would like to move Marc Savard so they can give the reigns to Tyler Seguin who is likely ready to play in the NHL right now. I also think the Bruins can afford to wait a season for Seguin which is why this deal has been slow in developing.

From a Calgary perspective Savard is an obvious fit to play with Iginla, I don’t think it takes a genius to know that a guy like Marc could suddenly improve the playoff chances of the Flames significantly. But the price tag is a high one to pay. Honestly because he plays out west Robyn Regher does not get the credit he deserves as a top shut down defenseman, however NHL GM’s realize his value. Again that is likely another reason why this potential deal is stalling.

Now lets gets practical for a second. If this trade happened as such that would leave the Calgary Flames with a roster of centers including Savard, Jokinen, Langkow, Stajan, Conroy, Sutter, Stone, and finally Backlund. Needless to say that is a lot of centers and while you want to be deep at center this is too many. So if this trade happens I suspect it confirms once and for all that Langkow’s injury is extremely serious and could be career threatening.

I suspect an attempt would also be made to convert Olli Jokinen to LW. If it worked the Flames would go from weak offensively to having a formidable top 6 with some pop on the third line. So imagine if you will these lines…

Obviously you can mix and match however you like but it certainly looks like a roster that should move up from dead last in the league in goals scored. The sole reason this team missed the playoffs.

If you ask for my honest gut feeling I don’t believe this trade will happen as both sides will overvalue their assets. Only time will tell if this occurs but for Flames fans don’t expect to hear an end to these types of rumors anytime soon.

Have a good one!
