Tennessee backing out, or running out of their football series with North Carolina?

In another embarrassment to the already stained reputation of a once mighty football power, Tennessee Athletic Director Mike Hamilton has decided to cancel the upcoming football series with North Carolina, eluding to the fact the upcoming schedule was going to be too tough for the Vols.  The UNC series was supposed to take place in 2011-12.

The opponent Hamilton wants to trade the Tar Heels for is the University of Buffalo.  Of course, this makes for an easier schedule, since Hamilton has his heart set on a bowl game, and that can’t happen since the schedule is loaded with huge games early in the year.  Besides, having Buffalo in Knoxville makes for a profitable home game which will improve the Vols bottom line.  That’s all this is about.

Hamilton the businessman once again shows why he has no clue as to how to run a football program.  Too bad Tennessee couldn’t make the Kiffin move a package deal since they both have ruined what men like General Neyland, Doug Dickey, Johnny Majors and Phil Fulmer have so painstakingly built.

“We’ve let Carolina know that we’re going to go a different direction since they were not able to move the game and the series to a later date in the decade,” Hamilton said.

“Personally, it’s kind of a downer for me because I was looking forward to playing Carolina as a North Carolina native, but without the ability to move it later in the decade, we felt like we needed to break that six-game stretch up and put a non-BCS team in there.”

This is another case of the Vols running scared.  Earlier, Tennessee turned down a chance to play a series with USC.  Think about the hype that would surround that one.  But Hamilton turned down the request.  Probably fearing the Vols would embarrass themselves on the field, despite the fact USC will be on probation in the years to come and make for a beatable opponent, Hamilton has turned the embarrassment of losing on the field, into an embarrassment for not even trying.

When Florida State was building their program back in the 70’s, they took on any team, anytime, anywhere.  They were not afraid to play the big boys no matter what kind of team they had.  You would think that a school like Tennessee would have players who can compete with anyone.  Or has the program slipped so far that its time to think about dropping the “Eastern” from their conference name and become  a member of the Southern Conference?  Then again, Appalachian State could be a tough matchup.  That is if Hamilton has the guts to put them on the schedule.

Hamilton left us all with these parting words:  “We’ll buy out of the series and move ahead.”

Is that move ahead, or run like hell?
