Als Beat Bombers But Lose Calvillo

Posted By Jim Penner On Aug 19 2010 @ 11:01 pm In Winnipeg Blue Bombers | No Comments

It seems that the Winnipeg Blue Bombers don’t want to show up to a CFL game until midway through the 2nd quarter.  Of the first 8 games this year the Bombers have trailed early in all but one game.  The trend continued against the Montreal Alouettes as Winnipeg found itself down 24-0.  And the Bombers never recovered losing the game 39-17.

Anthony Calvillo played well through 25 minutes.  Playing so that the game looked easy, Calvillo drove the Alouettes up and down the field and was unlucky to only put 24 points on the board.  With 5 minutes to go in the 1st half, Calvillo took a hard shot to the ribs and was carted off the field and taken to hospital for further evaluation.

Chris Leak, the preseason 3rd string QB, came into the game and was able to move the Alouettes enough to cap the game with several scoring drives and 99 yards passing.  The Alouettes defense forced three fumbles by the Bombers.  They returned one of QB Steven Jyles drops for a TD.

For the Bombers Steven Jyles had only 123 passing yards as the Bombers struggled against the Montreal pass defense.  Brock Ralph had the only pass receiving TD.  Freddy Ried had over 100 yards in rushing for the first time in almost a year.  Jovon Johnson returned a punt for his 2nd punt return TD of the year.  Johnson also had a goal line pick to stop an Allouettes drive.

Not helping the cause where a number of drops by Winnipeg receivers including two on long passes that went through Adarius Bowman’s hands.  Bomber 3rd string QB Alex Brink went 1 for 5 in a mop up roll once the game was out of reach.

The Alouettes go to 6-2 to take top spot in the CFL East while the Bombers fall to 2-6 for last place.  The Bombers have a bye week and then go into the Saskatchewan for their annual Labour Day thrashing at the hands of the stubble jumpers.
