Hanley Ramirez is a Selfish, Disrespectful Ballplayer

Last night in the Mets’ 6-5 victory over the Florida Marlins, Hanley Ramirez led off the top of the fifth inning with a pop out to shortstop against R.A. Dickey. Rather than jogging off the field and back to the dugout like a gentleman, Ramirez felt he had to run directly over the back of the pitcher’s mound. Allegedly, he was trying to erase part of the Mets’ symbol on the back slope of the mound.
What a joke! Naturally, the Mets did not do anything. Why would they jump at the perfect opportunity to fire up their ball club when they are content with mediocrity?
If you recall, earlier this season in Oakland, Athletics’ starter Dallas Braden was visibly furious when Alex Rodriguez crossed the mound after flying out. Words were exchanged, and Braden had to be restrained by his teammates. Soon after the incident, Braden pitched a perfect game.
As for the Mets, I wonder if they will retaliate in tonight’s game. This would be a spark plug to get the Mets going, especially because it would build team unity. No opposing player should be intentionally trying to wipe away the home team’s symbol behind the mound. That’s just immature.
Ramirez needs to be put in his place for his actions. His whole career has been marred by his lack of hustle and prima donna style of play on and off the field. He is the sole reason that former Marlins’ manager Fredi Gonzalez was fired.
A few months ago after Ramirez accidentally kicked a live ball deep into the left field corner and casually jogged after it, Gonzalez removed Hanley from the game. Ramirez put up a stink in the media, and indirectly, Gonzalez lost his job due to the incident.
Up until that moment, Gonzalez had done a fine job with a young Marlins’ team for the past few seasons. It’s a shame that a selfish player like Ramirez cost Gonzalez his position.
I hope the Mets send Ramirez a message tonight saying that his behavior will not be tolerated, at least inside Citi Field.
