Big Time Expectations

As summer practices close for the Wisconsin Badgers football team, expectations for the 2010 season are heating up.  Coming off a convincing victory in the Champs Sports Bowl over a tough Miami squad has pushed this years Badgers squad into the Big Ten limelight.  Coach Brett Bielema enters his 5th season at helm for the Badgers with a 38-14 record.  It is Bielema’s job to have this team ready come September 4th for the opener at UNLV, a team the Badgers last played in 2007.  In 2010 the Badgers won 10 games for just the 6th time in school history and the 2nd under the Bielemaregime.  Essentially the Badgers return 16 starters, including 10 on an offense that averaged over 200 yards per game on the ground and in the air.  Only 6 others schools in Division one College Football accomplished the feat.  On offense, the Badgers are led by Senior Quarterback Scott Tolzien, the Big Ten’s 2009 leader in Pass Efficiency.  Also returning is the 2009 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and Heisman hopeful John Clay.  On the other side of the football, the Badgers will be led by the linebacking trio of Chris Borland, Mike Taylor and Culmer St. Jean.

This year’s key stretch for the Badgers will be an Oct. 16 meeting at Camp Randall against Big Ten favorite, Ohio State.  The following week the Badgers travel to Kinnick Stadium for a date with a tough Iowa Hawkeye squad.  If the Badgers can get through those two midseason contents either 2-0 or 1-1, they may be looking towards a trip to Pasadena.  The Badgers are ranked 12th in the preseason Associated Press Poll, one of four Big Ten teams ranked in the Top 25.

My next blog will take in an depth look at the Badgers high-powered offense.  One that just might be the best in the land.
