Michigan Wolverines 2010 Preview

And we’re off….well, almost. The most exciting time of the year is less than a week away. That’s right folks, college football is here. I have been tasked with blogging about a team that I rooted for as a child and young adult….The Michigan Wolverines. This is my first time ever blogging and I hope to give you a little insight and a little humor over the next few months. And from looking back at these last two years of Michigan football, we might need a lot of humor to get through this season.
A little about this blogger to start. I grew up a rabid Michigan fan in Ohio. I know, I know, but my parents were from Michigan and I was brainwashed as a child. I followed them closely all year round and even made the trip to C-Bus and Ann Arbor to watch the Wolverines and Buckeyes play each year. That was during the John Cooper era for the Buckeyes and the Wolverines pretty much dominated the rivalry. Oh, how times have changed. Anyway, back to me. I went to Columbus for college and have never left. That was 13 years ago. I found it much easier to silently root for the Wolverines versus wearing my maize and blue out to the bars. Those colors evoke some pretty vicious emotions from drunken Buckeye fans and I found myself in a few less than desireable situations. However, I still follwed my Wolverines from the quiet confines of my living room and the internet. I’m excited to publicly follow them again, kinda.
Now, I get to blog about these Wolverines for all of you. I think it is going to be fun. But then again, what is my definition of fun? Some would argue that following this team is about as much fun as rolling around in glass and then jumping into a pool of rubbing alcohol. Well, that might not be too far off depending on the product that Rich Rodriguez puts on the field in Ann Arbor this year.
I could go into a breakdown of offensive and defensive schemes(Yes, I think UM is planning on playing defense this year), but this year is all about Rich Rod. This is a make or break year for him. 3-13 in the Big Ten his first two years isn’t cutting it up North. The vultures are circling his program. NCAA violations, a lackluster defense and the inability to beat the hated Buckeyes has former players and new athletic David Brandon ready to put Rich Rod out of his misery and bring in a real “Michigan man”. Rich Rod can stop all of this by getting some much needed W’s this year.
The schedule sets up for Michigan early, but the going gets much tougher as they get deep into the Big Ten campaign. If they can get wins early against a solid UConn team and a rebuilding Notre Dame team, this team could get into October at 5-0 heading into their rivalry game against Michigan State. But they have road games at Penn State and Ohio State. They get Bucky the Badger at home this year, but Wisky is going to be tough to beat anywhere. They could go 7-5 or they could go 4-8. Rich Rod hopes it’s the former with a couple of upsets thrown in. A 9-3 season and trip to a reputable bowl will save his job. 7 or 8 wins probably will too, but it’s going to be tough sledding to get there.
Michigan will score points this year, that’s a given. They have the talent to run Richie’s spread offense, but the defense is another question. They couldn’t stop the Rick Moranis led Little Giants the last two years. Seriously, they were that bad. Snoop Dogg’s Little Raiders would have driven their pimped out bus into Ann Arbor and put 35 up on the Wolverines, all while Coach Snoop rolled a fatty and recruited some co-eds to join his stable of ladies. This D gave up almost 400 yards a game last year. That was good for worst in the program’s history. They are going to have to outscore everyone this year. For you bettors out there, take the over in every UM game this year if it’s under 60.
Rich Rod has his hands full this year. He’s coaching for his job and his future. If he fails this year, he’s gone and won’t be coaching with the big boys for a while, if ever again. There is a lot on the line for one of the most legendary programs in college football history. There are more questions than answers as this team prepares for its opener on September 4, but I will be with you all year to see what happens.
If anybody reads this and has questions or comments, please feel free to let me know. If there is something you want to hear about, I will be more than happy to try and accomodate. Again, that’s IF anyone actually reads this.
Oh, I love gambling. So, I will be making some picks each week and tracking my progress throughout the season. If there is a game you like and want my take, let me know.
