What can any fan say about last night’s games between the Cowboys and the Texans except “you gotta be kidding me”?!
Last night the Cowboys showed that they are still the same team that lost in the playoffs versus the Giants as opposed to the team that ran over the Eagles for their first playoff win in over a decade. Maybe it was the hype of the Dallas/Houston rivalry, maybe the Cowboys just didn’t prepare enough, or maybe they just bought their own hype. No matter the reason they just plain stunk. Allan Ball showed problems tackling and a lack of covering ability. Felix Jones blew run by missing a pitch and turning the ball over. Houston’s defensive line blew over the Cowboy’s line. Missed assignments, poor execution, and just being outplayed. It was a long night for Dallas and you can bet come week 3 there is going to be a microscope on the Dallas versus Houston game at Reliant Stadium.
The good news is that it was a preseason game, there were some injuries on the line and in the secondary that kept players out, and that we know the Cowboys can play better on both sides of the ball, so these problems should be fixable. The question is will they fix it? Fans were just getting used to a newer more forceful group that won in the playoffs and seemed like it could go at least to the NFC championship. So if Wade Phillips decides to play his starters in the last preseason game, which is usually reserved for backups, it shouldn’t necessarily be considered a bad thing. Maybe it’s Wade finally taking a more stern approach to a team in need of a little discipline and consequences to a lack of hustle and focus. Maybe it will open the eyes of some players who drag their feet a little more than others. And maybe, just maybe it’ll light a fire under the team that will last them throughout the season.
The Cowboys are a good team in the end, but the game against Houston showed weaknesses in some of the questionable positions on the team and in the end it was just a preseason game. The sting of the loss, though, could be with the team for awhile.
