After losing the series finally to the Diamondbacks and getting swept by the Phillies the Padres have lost four games in a row for the first time all season. It would be easy to say the the Padres are not playing well and they have hit a rough spot. This is true if you are soley looking at the wins and lost column, but the padres are playing well they are playing Padres baseball the brand of baseball that got them to first place. What is missing during the four game skid is the clutch hitting. The Padres did face stud pitchers in Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels in the Phillies series which could certainly be contributed to the offensive struggles. In the Phillies series the Padres only scored 3 runs on 18 hits. The Phillies scored 11 runs on 17 hits in those 3 games. The clutch hitting is huge I think the Padres played very well and showed they can play with the big boys, and with a few clutch hits here and there they could have won that series. The Padres also had a season high four errors(should have been three) on Sunday which does not help. Now the Padres are not going to win very many series in which they can only score three runs but with this style of baseball you put yourselves in a position to win every game and hope the other team breaks first. There is a very small margin of errorbetween winning a series and getting swept, like the Phillies achieved this weekend. If we were going to play the Phillies in the playoffs today I will feel good about are chances. Although we would have to face Roy Halladay in that series instead of Joe Blanton.
The Padres now go on the road to face every team in the division. It will be a huge couple of weeks and the Padres will come out of the road trip with a good idea of where they stand for the remainder of the season. With Latos, Garland and Richard throwing very well I hope the Padres can turn things around and put together a winning streak. (That’s 3 in a row or more, HaHa.)
