It’s been a tough summer in the hockey world. Well, it’s been a relatively boring summer that is. The lack of trades and signings has made for a tedious time of hitting F5. So the other day, jonesing for a hockey fix I resorted to desperate measures; I busted out ‘The Mighty Ducks’ trilogy.
That’s right, not just the first movie but all three. Say what you will about the movies, but they’re still fun! You may think because I’m a Kings fan that I should revile the movies, yet on the contrary, I love them. They remind me that the Ducks were named after a silly, Disney children’s movie!
However, that’s not why I’m bringing this up.
While watching the second movie I noticed something. During one of their patented ‘newspaper headline’ transitions, there is an interesting ‘fake’ article next to the prominent Mighty Ducks headline:
If you’ll notice, the headline reads, “Fehr Says Strike is Possibility”. Donald Fehr was Executive Director of the MLBPA at the time. The film came out in 1994 which means it was likely filming during the tumultuous pre-strike period for the MLB, hence the reference in the newspaper headline.
The interesting twist is that Donald Fehr is now the Executive Director of the NHLPA. Similarly, the NHL is headed toward the next CBA and hockey-gods forbid, another strike. Either this is a crazy coincidence or some kind of ridiculous prophecy. Whatever it is, it adds an interesting layer to a childhood favorite.
