Players to Watch

Posted By Donald Lappe On Aug 30 2010 @ 11:41 am In Army | 2 Comments

The 2010 season begins this week, so today I will give you some players to watch for Army this year.

Offense

Trent Steelman – One of the biggest developments for the Black Knights this offseason has been Steelman’s improvement in the passing game. In one of the intrasquad scrimmages Steelman hit wide receiver Davyd Brooks for a 61-yard touchdown pass. Steelman will be counted on to continue making good decisions while directing Army’s option attack. The success of Army’s season is dependent on Steelman as he is the catalyst for both the rushing and passing attacks. Steelman has shown nothing but improvement and with a year running the triple option under his belt, expect a big season from him in 2010.

Jared Hassin – One of the biggest holes in Army’s offense in 2009 was a legitimate rushing threat at fullback. In Hassin the Black Knights have found a dynamic rusher who they can rely on to consistently gain solid yards. Being able to threaten the middle of a run defense will open up more opportunities for Steelman and the slotbacks on the outside. The natural improvement after a full year in the system coupled with the added threat of Hassin should help Army make big strides offensively in 2010.

Davyd Brooks – Army did not have much potential for big plays in 2009. Trent Steelman has improved his arm strength and Brooks provides a target that can potentially get behind the defense for big plays. Once Army establishes their ground game, defenses will be forced to move their safeties into the box which will open up opportunities to make plays in the passing game.

Defense

Josh McNary – McNary is a key player in the Black Knights defense because he consistently disrupts offenses by getting penetration and pressuring the quarterback. McNary has received a lot of national attention and it is well deserved. Look for offenses to focus on him in pass protection, which will allow Army to be creative with their blitzing packages in order to create pressure and force mistakes.

Stephen Anderson – Anderson returns after suffering a knee injury against Air Force that ended his 2009 season. He is the unquestioned leader of the defense and will be counted on the stuff the run. So far he has looked good in his return, but until he plays in a game it will be difficult to say he is back to full speed.

Andrew Rodriguez – Rodriguez has missed most of the preseason with a back injury. He is a big part of the defense, and if he is out for an extended period of time Army will have to move some personnel to accommodate for the loss. Army is hoping he can get back soon and contribute.
