Pathetic Pirates, Karstens end long skids

For one night anyway, the stars all seemed to align just right for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Rookies Neil Walker and Jose Tabata combined for seven hits and six RBI and Jeff Karstens ended a personal skid with six strong innings as the Pirates snapped their second longest road losing streak this season with a 14-7 thumping over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.

The bumbling Bucs hadn’t won on the road since July 28 at Colorado, but even worse … Pittsburgh went 17 straight games without a road triumph earlier in the season.

Stuck on 13 road wins for the season for over a month, Pittsburgh ensured itself of not tying the all-time major league record for fewest road wins for a season.  Although at 14-52, Pittsburgh is on pace to easily have the worst road win percentage this decade.

Karstens gets run support to snap personal skid

Karstens snapped an ugly streak of his own. The righthander hadn’t won in 11 consecutive starts – the longest current streak in the major leagues – getting just 18 runs of support. He yielded just two runs and four hits in six innings in the win after missing a start with shoulder fatigue.

Walker had four hits and four RBI and homered for the third time

Walker has been a pleasant surprise

in four games and Tabata snapped an 0-for-10 skid with three hits, three runs and two RBI.  Garrett Jones homered and Andrew McCutchen wrapped three hits in the Bucs’ second highest run total of the season.  They scored 15 against Milwaukee on July 21.

The low-scoring Bucs scored nine runs or more for the first time in 38 games after enduring a 54-game streak earlier this season.
