Wake Up: Cap Woes are a Built-In Part of the System!!!

Those people in Chicago who are blaming Dale Tallon for their cap woes are all “glass half-empty” kind of people. When any GM goes into a draft, they do so trying to pick players who will excel with the least amount of waiting time.
When too many of your young’uns mature very quickly at the same time, what follows is cap woes… and that is what happened in Chicago. This situation happened not because the GM was incompetent, but because that is just how the marketplace works. A young gun who excels very quickly and reaches Restricted status can demand and can get big dollars quickly. If his team doesn’t offer the big dollars, then any number of teams will.
So, hey, those of you on the blaming Tallon bandwagon, smarten up. You won a cup. What more can a GM do than that?
It’s up to any GM to keep the cupboards filled with prospects so that every year the turnover gets replaced by young stars who are NHL-ready and produce early. Any team that is going to get to the cup final has got to have young guys producing alot while they are still under or close to $1 million a year.
And when any team wins, there are negative consequences, because everyone involved believes he is now worth a huge raise… and there are just so many raises that can go around. This is the nature of the cap system… to prevent the “New York Yankee” syndrome… to prevent a team from being able to buy themselves a great team every year.
