Blazing Hot Start to 2010 US Open

Posted By Bennett Snyder On Sep 1 2010 @ 2:01 pm In Tennis | No Comments

The big story of the early US Open action isn’t any big upsets, its the heat. The #10 seed Victoria Azarenka collapsed on the court because the temperature was too much for her. After playing most of the match in the sun, Novak Djokovic had thisĀ  quip to say about the moment when the shade came out “I don’t know how to describe it, it was a sleeping with my girlfriend kind of feeling”. Unless the heat and humidity decrease, look for more people to retire from the tournament, along with the big time favorites desperately playing to get off the court as quick as possible.

Some more early round observations:

  • Federer and Nadal will rarely if ever have to worry about the heat because they will only be playing night matches it seems.
  • It’s good to see Ana Ivanovic playing well again, she steamrolled her way into the third round, beating my expectations in the process.
  • With no Serena or Justin Henin, it leaves the field wide open. Look for Clijsters to repeat, or Sharapova/Wozniacki/Venus to win.
  • Speaking of my favorite player in the world, the very beautiful Caroline Wozniacki, I finally feel like my constant rooting for her might not be all for not this time, as she is the number 1 seed, and won the summer series (1 million dollar bonus if she wins the US Open because of that). She is playing the best tennis she ever has and I feel like this is her time to shine, although she has a tough road.
  • Speaking of tough roads, Federer would have been better off served being unseeded than the two seed. He would have to play Soderling in the Quarters, Roddick or Djokovic in the Semis before playing most likely Nadal in the Finals, because the only player Nadal has to worry about is Andy Murray.
  • Of course, Andy Murray shows less heart than the Tin Man in big time matches, so unless somebody before then plays other worldly tennis, you can almost pencil Nadal into the Finals.

Usually when I end up making predictions they end up jinxing the player, so check back in a few days when I try to save face by explaining why the players I said would win end up losing.
