Chanticleers not Cupcakes

For those who may not have heard, Coastal Carolina University has a football team (CCU’s entering it’s seventh season).  Folks in Morgantown, West Virginia should think of them not as “cupcakes”, but as “chanticleers”.  Let’s take a second to pause and answer the most obvious question everyone has, “What is a chanticleer”?

Per Coastal Carolina University’s website: A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barn-yard with cunning and wit.  His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.  So there you have it, a gun-toteing guy who hunts and lives off the rough terrain of the mountains against a smart and competitive rooster.  I’ve got a feeling this Saturday’s match up between WVU and CCU will be as one sided as a fight between the gun-toting Mountaineer and the Rooster.

For starters, CCU was predicted to finish 3rd in the Big South Conference in the pre-season polls.  On the other hand, WVU was predicted to finish 2nd in the Big East.  The Big South, is a FCS conference (formerly I-AA) where as the Big East is a FBS conference (formerly I-A).  Don’t get it twisted, both teams have really talented players in the secondary that are more than capable of holding their own against the competition.  Coastal Carolina junior corner back Josh Norman earned both All-American and first team All-Big South honors last season.  Norman set a conference record with eight interceptions, which ranked him third nationally in that category.  West Virginia senior safety Robert Sands was a first team All-Big East pick in 2009.  Sands is widely expected to have yet another stand out season and then declare for the 2011 NFL draft.

Great secondary play is always a nice thing for a former defensive back like myself to see, however, WVU’s ground game led by Noel Devine will limit the impact that Norman and his fellow Chanticleers in the secondary will have.  Should Devine need a blow, the speedy tandem of Jock Sanders (who also plays slot receiver) and Tavon Austin are more than ready and willing to step in and keep pressure on CCU.  Therefore, I can foresee a game in which the un-proven Gino Smith and the WVU wide out corp can get by without having to produce a whole heck of a lot for the Mountaineers to begin the season 1-0.

Mountaineers should win this one by thirty or more so, my final score WVU 42- CCU 7.  The win for West Virginia this coming Saturday will be bitter sweet for some members of the Mountaineer squad because it will come at the expense of a homeboy.  Chanticleer true freshmen running back Jeff Allen is a Morgantown native and 2009 graduate of Morgantown High School.  This will be one homecoming that Allen will soon want to forget.  Not only that, but he and the rest of the CCU football team will not begin the 2010 season ruling the roost(couldn’t resist).
