Old Dog Paterno Pulls Out a New Trick

For the first time in 45 seasons, Joe Paterno will start a freshman quarterback in the season opener. Yes, Robert Bolden is making history before he even takes a snap.

Granted Youngstown State is not the toughest team on the Nittany Lions’ schedule, however, it says a lot about what Paterno thinks of Bolden (from Orchard Lake, MI) to tap him for the start. Redshirt junior Matt McGloin and sophomore Kevin Newsome should still see some snaps, and who knows what Paterno will decide to do in Tuscaloosa.

Against the Penguins Penn State will have the luxury of testing out a few players and hopes to see signs of improvement in its special teams play. Look for the defense to be strong and the offense to be somewhat of a petri dish.
