Well here we go everyone, Husker football is about to start…finally, that long hot summer is giving way to what we all have been waiting for…Football Season. And with Football Season brings cooler weather, tail-gates, home-made chili and something to look forward to do in Saturday besides mowing the lawn. The Huskers are going to try and make a statement their last year in the Big 12 Conference. The Season Opener for the 8th ranked Huskers is with Western Kentucky.
We are less than 48hrs away from the start of the season and there are a lot of unanswered questions, mostly “Who will the starting quarterback be?” Will Zac Lee land the starting spot? Cody Green? Or did Taylor Martinez blow them both away to lead this year’s Offense? I am sure they all worked hard, I am excited to see who will land the spot. Bo Pelini says he will announce the starter on Saturday…c’mon Bo at least give us time to complain/cheer/boo your choice!
The offense comes off last year’s rank of 99th where the Huskers lost 3 games by a total of 4 points, including the Texas :01 second loss in the Big 12 Championship…I know, I was there. Helu and Burkhead are both doing great in practice and let’s not forget Niles Paul will be back to rack up some receiving yards as well. I am ready to see the offense do some work this year!
Crick and the Defense are ready to show this Nation that although Suh is gone, the Blackshirts are coming back with 6 returning starters. Reported today, Will Compton will be out as middle linebacker with an injured foot. Let’s hope with him and Sean Fisher out Carl has backup plans. I am betting we will see a solid Defense on Saturday.
Western Kentucky will most likely enjoy the graciousness of the Husker fans as they are applauded on the way out of the stadium after their defeat. With their last win dating back to the 2008 rout of Murray State, the Hilltopper’s are going to be outmatched and the offense will most likely get beat on, nonetheless, they are reporting a better team this year. Kawaun Jakes will be the starting quarterback. I wonder if he knows what the turf at Memorial Stadium looks like, I am sure he will get the chance to check it out.
So that is my first week preview, it seems to be a fair and balanced reporting of each team…ok maybe a little more towards the Red, but not much to say about WK. The spread is 38 points, let’s see if the Offense can score that much on a winless team. Go Big Red and thank you Football Season for finally getting here!
