Habs: The Price is finally right !

Over the past couple of week’s Habs fans (including myself) became nervous as training camps in the NHL are about to begin and the Canadiens had not inked their starting goaltender to a contract for the upcoming season.

The reason that I was nervous was not because I thought that the Canadiens would be starting the season with Alex Auld in goal but mostly for the fan reaction if he wasn’t signed for the puck drop on October 7th against the Leafs. The city has a love/hate relationship with Price. The longer that the contract was not signed, the more the haters would hate Price and some of the fans may have potentially turned against him if he wasn’t signed to start off the season.

Whether the players admit it or not, I am convinced that a player getting booed (especially in home games) affects their play. And for the Canadiens to be successful in the 2010-2011 season, Carey Price will need to be a key component to the team.

Earlier this week, a local TV reporter tweeted that he learned from a source close to the goaltender that Price would strike if he wouldn’t receive $3M per season. That triggered the Price haters to start bashing the young goaltender and re-fuelled the Price vs Halak debate. As soon as I heard about that tweet, I found it ridiculous. On Thursday morning, Gerry Johannson, Price’s agent, was on the Team 990 and denied that rumour, and discussed the contract talks at that time. After that interview, you could not help but to feel positive about the negotiations. I certainly did. A few hours later, Pierre Gauthier announced that the Habs and Carey Price had come to an agreement. Looking back, the deal was probably already signed when his agent was on the Team 990, so then you wonder. Did he say that Price would definitely not hold out just to prevent any negative reactions from the fans? Did they wait to make the announcement 2 days before package tickets go on sale? Did they wait to make the announcement 2 days before Halak returns to Montreal for an autograph session to get the attention off Halak?

I guess we will never find out, but we know that at 2 years $5.5 million; the Price was right!
