Vikings Trade Rosenfels and Reynaud to Giants

The Sage Rosenfels era has officially came to a close in Minnesota.  Of course, that era never really got started.  Two years ago the Vikings traded a fourth round draft pick to the Texans for Sage with the thought that he would compete with Tarvaris Jackson for the starting quarterback job.  While Rosenfels was on the way to losing that battle, Brett Favre was on the way to assume the starting job from both of them.  This resulted in the highest paid third string QB not named JaMarcus Russell, but to his credit Sage never came across as bitter or angry.  Welcome to my biggest problem with Sage Rosenfels; his demeanor.  He is perfectly ok with being a back-up.  That is not something you want from your NFL QB.  Even this preseason, when by the numbers he should have started over Brett Favre, he sounded complacent, almost defeated in his back-up role.  I am not here to slam on Sage or apologize for  T-Jack, because they have both had good and bad moments during their careers in Minnesota, but while I am certainly in the minority, I think Jackson is the better quarterback now and for the future.  Whether he can be the player that posted a perfect QB rating while earning offensive player of the week honors against Arizona in 2008, or the player that has looked awful in a limited role during the 2010 preseason, remains to be seen.  The biggest positive of this trade is that the Vikings were able to get some value for one of these guys and didn’t have to release anybody, especially the newest fan favorite, QB Joe Webb.  That is the good news.

The bad news is that Minnesota had to throw in multi-talented Darius Reynaud.  Darius, an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia in 2008, became an exciting player for the Vikings, especially on special teams.  He really seemed like the perfect return guy/limited action running back that can be an explosive weapon for any team(i.e. Darren Sproles, San Diego Chargers).  That is exactly what the New York Giants think too.  Overall, this could be a good trade for both as the Vikings got two draft picks, a 2011 5th rounder, and a 2012 conditional draft pick(dependent on how much Sage plays).  Maybe the most important benefit for the Vikes is that now, there are no questions concerning the depth chart and they can focus on New Orleans.  Thursday is coming up fast.
