So much for Saturday’s game against Youngstown State being a testing ground for a few QB options! Robert Bolden, the first freshman to start a season opener under center during the tenure of Joe Paterno, took all the snaps in the 44-14 victory.
Bolden threw two TD passes to Brett Brackett and was 20 of 29 for 239 yards overall. He was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for his efforts.
There was good news on special teams too, as Chaz Powell returned a kickoff 100 yards for a TD to start the second half. Collin Wagner hit three field goals, with a long of 49 yards, in adding to the Nittany Lions’ totals.
PSU did surprisingly little on the ground. Stephfon Green and Kevin Newsome each scored TDs but Evan Royster was the team’s leading rusher with 45 of its 137 total yards.
And news of JoePa’s demise were exaggerated. He was on the sidelines as usual.
Next week will be a different story as the Nittany Lions travel to Tuscaloosa to take on the number 1 team in the nation. For the next couple of days, however, Happy Valley can enjoy the win.
