Dolphins Sign Batman

A day after Jeff Ireland has taken over the team, the Dolphins have picked up All-Pro return specialist Clifton “Batman” Smith. Smith was a Pro Bowler in 2008, when he averaged 27.6 yards per kick return. In 2009, Batman had a 29.1 yard average, but ended up with a severe concussion and only played 11 games. He also averaged 10.1 yards per punt return.
Smith is called “Batman” because he wears a Batman shirt under his jersey every game. He also has the nickname “Peanut” due to his size (5’9″), but would you rather be called “Batman” or “Peanut”? Exactly.
If Smith is Batman, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was Robin. Smith is a huge upgrade over He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, who aside from one great game against the Jets would run out of bounds before contact on returns. Smith is a dangerous returner who should be able to put the Dolphins in good field position every time he touches the ball. Smith’s addition means Davone Bess will no longer handle punt returns, which is a good thing. Bess was adequate at best and fumbled on several occasions. This will also decrease the chance of Bess getting injured on a punt return, as we do not have as many stand-up WRs since the Greg Camarillo trade.
In 2010…Batman returns.
