I told you last week to get ready for the Manny bounce.  A big boost from the newly acquired slugger.  It turns out the Sox got just that.  Chicago went a lusty 6-0 in their first half dozen games with Ramirez in uniform.  One problem.  One really, really, big problem.  The Twins did not cooperate.  Far from it.  With Jim Thome leading the way, Minnesota continued to steamroll the competition. When all was said and done, Ozzie and company gained a measly half game.  That’s all. There was nothing more to show for six consecutive wins with Ramirez and seven in a row overall. Since the perfect start with Manny, the Pale Hose have lost two straight to Detroit.  That, coupled with two Twins wins, puts the Sox a robust 5 1/2 games out.  If nobody else is going to do it, I will.  I am pushing the panic button.  I will still hold out hope, but right now, with much regret, it looks like it’ll be Minny over Manny when the dust clears.

No guarantees on winning a championship any time soon, but Cubs brass is assuring us they will add more statues.  Earlier this week the North Siders honored Billy Williams with a beautiful statue of the longtime outfielder/coach/exec. Cubs officials say look for Williams and those already honored in such a fashion to get some company.  No word on if Mark Prior will be honored with a bust.

After a putrid preseason, the Bears host Detroit Sunday in their season opener.  The Lions should be better than last year, but in Soldier Field, Chicago should come out on top.  They better.  The match-up with Motown could serve as quite a barometer for the season.  With Dallas and Green Bay looming in Weeks 2 and 3, the last thing the Bears can afford is a home loss to a team that’s won twice in two seasons.  One large problem facing Chicago on Sunday will be Ndamukong Suh.  The hulking rookie out of Nebraska will be on the hunt for bear from the opening whistle.  The Chicago offensive line was sieve-like in the exhibition contests.  Let’s hope they tighten things up.  I know Jay Cutler hopes for the same thing.  When all is said and done, look for the Monsters of the Midway to use the fans to their advantage and rattle a young Detroit team just enough to come away with the decision.

On the college gridiron, Northwestern hosts Illinois State Saturday after winning a squeaker at Vanderbilt last week. The Wildcats hope for a little more breathing room, after being blitzed all day by the Commodores.  Illinois and Northern Illinois also play Saturday.  Both are coming off of losses.

More bull or could the United Center get Melo this season?  We’ve heard it all before.  The Bulls are going to get KG!  The Bulls are going to get Kobe!  The Bulls are going to get LeBron and maybe Wade and maybe Bosh!  Insert annoying game show buzzer here.  As we know, none of these marquee talents ended up in Chicago.  However, the latest buzz around town may just have some meat to it.  Carmelo Anthony wants out of Denver…that we already knew.  Until recently, though, all we’ve heard about is New York as his eventual destination. Now there are rumbles that the Knicks or Bulls could acquire the all-star.  The Bulls have much more to offer than the Knicks do.  Anthony could win in Chicago now.  It makes more sense for him to head to Chicago over the Big Apple.  Then again, everyone said it made sense for LeBron to be a Bull too.  We’ll see.  Chances of Melo coming to town by opening night? 49-51.  Cross your horns Bulls fans.

When the ice is down at the United Center make sure you have a program handy, and not just for the visitors.  Days after officially introducing new net minder Marty Turco, the Blackhawks sign another new face.  Forward Ryan Potulny inks a one year contract. He scored 15 goals and tallied 17 assists for the Oilers last season.  Look for Potulny to challenge for a spot on the Hawks’ fourth line.
