Yankees Dance a Texas 2.5 Step

New York heads to the Ballpark in Arlington for a possible playoff preview, sitting just 2.5 precious games ahead of the Rays. Although the .550 of the Rangers pales in comparison to Minnie’s .593 winning percentage, the debate still rages whether the Yankees would be better off playing the Twins or Texas in the ALDS.
The Bombers are not a lock to win the AL East outright, at least not without a healthy Andy Pettitte and with their current revolving door policy when it comes to starters 3-5 in the rotation, but they might be better off coming in as the Wild Card.
Minnesota has the experience blended with young talent. Ron Gardenhire is an excellent manager to boot. The Twins get little recognition as they reside in hockey country, but they have a revitalized Jim Thome and Carl Pavano (16-10 – HOW?!) who starts tonight against Cleveland.
Coming out of the West, the Rangers have been biding their time waiting for the Angels to falter, which they did this year. “It’s Time” declares rangers.com. The team has a lot of new faces, but some dominant vetarans. Josh Hamilton, though suffering from sore ribs, is in MVP contention. Cliff Lee hasn’t been himself of late, but Texas hopes he’ll regain that swagger soon. And we can’t forget Vladimir Guerrero, who at 35, is still kicking and hitting, batting .301. C.J. Wilson, who pitches in the series opener, is 14-6.
Whom should the Yankees want to face? I honestly don’t know. I think the Twins are beatable, and although Texas is down right now, they still scare the bejeezus out of me. One thing I think New York does want is home field advantage, especially in the five-game ALDS, and it won’t get that as the Wild Card.
What can they do now? It’s simple: Just win, baby.
