The Atlanta Falcons were grounded today, not by the Steelers D but by themselves. Countless plays of inept offense, dropped passes and missed opportunities grounded the Falcons today. A team that was favored in this game(albeit only by 2 1/2) was only able to muster up 3 field goals and even that was 3 out of 4. After Troy “the hair” Polamalu intercepted Ryan’s week pass to Roddy White and then the Steelers missed their second field goal with little time left, I thought – wait we have life left. A week run attempt and a kneel down and we were in overtime. Win the coin toss, weak series, bad punt, missed tackles and a 50 yard scamper and the first loss of the season is in the books. Back to that weak effort at the end of regulation. They had the short outs all day long 3 or 4 of those little dink passes and field goal range. At least give a chance for the win like at the end of the first half. I must sound like a whining baby but I spent the whole game surrounded by a bunch of blowhard Pittsburgh fans who annoyed me to no end. With phrases like Pitt deserves to lose and their team sucks, but when the touchdown happened you would have thought the Steelers had just won the Superbowl. One bright spot was Tony Gonzalez made his 1000 catch of his career in this game – way to go Tony.
This game was not a Defensive Gem but more like an offensive struggle. Mike Mularkey needs to go back and look at this game. See how many times we ran the ball into the defensive line for no gain. No traps, no stunts just straight forward running with no holes. Review the tapes. There needs to be more shifts and more screens. I know Jenkins was out and Roddy was basically on his own but we have Tony and Harry to pick up the slack. The last thing that was missing was the down field threat. No long passes everything short to the outside or short over the middle. They needed to go down field at least a couple of times to get their linebackers and safeties from creeping up on the plays.
I know it is game one and we have the Cardinals next but I had this penciled in as a win with Big Ben out. I always thought we had the chance to win and we were going to, that is until the the 50 yard run. I hope there is a big turn around from game one to two.
