By the time the Bengals offense finally got started it was 31-3. That came after a Brandon Tate kickoff return for touchdown to start the 3rd quarter. This was such a dominating win by the Patriots that I came away with more questions than answers. Is the Patriots defense better than I expected, or is the Bengals offense still trying to figure it out. During obvious passing situations for the Bengals in the 1st half, the offensive line struggled. This was a problem last year as well.
In my preview, I was curious how the Bengals defense would approach covering Wes Welker. Well, they didn’t put Jonathan Joseph on him. They kept him outside. Welker had a great game, catching 8 balls for 64 yards and 2 touchdowns. He continually ran underneath, and the Bengals couldn’t tackle the guy.
New England had some very unique formations throughout the game. Their 1st touchdown came on a bunch way wide to the left. They lined up 2 tight ends with Welker behind them. It was a well designed play and Welker trotted in from 9 yards out.
Defensive Coordinator tried to bring pressure, tried to sit back in coverage, but nothing worked. The pressure couldn’t get there in time, and with a four man rush, it gave Brady all day to throw and he picked Cincinnati apart.
If there is one bright spot, the receiving core didn’t look bad. As long as they can get protection, the receivers were open.
As for the running game, Benson couldn’t get anything going. Bernard Scott had a strong 2nd half, but I don’t know how much to really read into that. He did play fast.
All in all, the Bengals got whipped but it’s just one game, and I wasn’t expecting a Cincinnati win. Next week, the Baltimore Ravens come to town. The Bengals won both confrontations last season, but Baltimore has a revamped offense.
To show you kind of how I watch a game, here are my observations and notes throughout the game. I stopped once it got to 17-0.

I currently work for the Sports Network. It's the best job ever! I am a 2010 graduate of Temple University where I majored in broadcast journalism, I LOVE SPORTS! That's why I am here. I have a vast knowledge and want to share my athletic intelligence with the world. Some people like to spend their time shooting down aliens in Halo; I like to spend my time watching sports, current and old. It's my passion! I got asked one time how I can watch a game over again when I already know the outcome. 5 minutes later, he's watching Happy Gilmore reciting all of the lines from the movie. Hypocrite! As for my favorite sports teams, I've been a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan. My favorite athlete is Allen Iverson. He didn't like practice that much, but when it came to gametime, no one let it all out on the floor like Iverson. He is absolutely beloved in the city of Brotherly Love. For college athletics, obviously I pay close attention to Temple. (Yes, football too) Even before I stepped foot on Temple's campus for the 1st time in 2005, I was a fan. Oh the good old days of John Chaney! Some other tidbits about myself, I love cheesesteaks, I hydrate myself with Welch's Grape Juice and Snapple. I love the HBO show Entourage. Also, when is Kenny Powers making his much anticipated return in Eastbound and Down!
