Bombers’ Big Showdown (Round 1) in Tampa

Posted By Stephanie Geosits On Sep 13 2010 @ 4:59 pm In New York Yankees | No Comments

With a half-game lead on the Rays, the Yankees open arguably their biggest series of the year thus far Monday in Tampa. The battle of the Cy Young contenders, CC Sabathia and David Price, kicks things off. Sabathia is gunning for win number 20 while Price is playing catchup, at 17 wins currently.

The bad news for the Yankees is that Sabathia was atrocious in his last outing against the Orioles and a lot of their players are banged up. Nick Swisher has a bone bruise, and Jorge Posada is coming back from concussion-like symptoms. Everyone seems to have something wrong.

And let’s not forget the UGLY series sweep by Texas. Joba gives up a game-tying homer in the eighth of game one, to give the Rangers new life and allow them to win the 13-inning debacle. Mo hits Jeff Franceour with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to surrender game two, and Dustin Moseley pitches admirably in game three, only to have the Yankee bats stifled by a rejuvenated Cliff Lee. Thanks for the memories, Texas.

Overall, this series isn’t do or die because the teams have a four-game set in the Bronx net week, but it is an opportunity to try to establish AL East dominance and gain that all-important home field advantage for the ALDS. We’ll see how they do.
