It was a pretty terrible weekend for Vols fans.
After watching Tennessee running back Tauren Poole run 141 yards in just the first half, fans thought the team was on their way to stomping over Oregon. At the end of the first half the score was 13-13. However, by the second half of the game the Oregon defense figured out what they needed to do to stop Poole and went on to destroy the Vols 48-13. It looked as if the Vols offense couldn’t recover from the 76-yard interception return touchdown during the 3rd quarter. According to Derek Dooley this team has a problem of giving up even before the game is over. “We need to change that before we get to anything else, being able to compete for four quarters, no matter what the score is.”
Next Saturday, Dooley and his boys are going to be taking on the Florida Gators who will prove to be an even tougher opponent than Oregon. The Gators are coming off a 38-14 win over USF. Unlike the Vols, the Gators were a stronger team in the second half and were able to finish off USF by the 3rd quarter with a lead of 28-14.
If you’re looking for one moment that really summed up the game for the Vols, it’s LaMichaels James running 72 yards to embarrass the Tennessee defense. There were more then a few chances for someone to lay a tackle on him and they just couldn’t.
If Tennessee is going to stand a chance against Florida, Matt Simms is going to have to put his throwing arm to use. Florida’s pass defense has been struggling latley which means the Vols are going to give Tauren Poole a break and throw the ball to guys like Jacob Carter and Brent Brewer.
