At the end of the day Ravens only won by one point, 10-9. Although it didn’t seem like a close game the way Ravens defense were playing. Jets committed 14 penalties for 125 yards and couldn’t get anything going on offense.
The first offensive play for the Ravens results in a fumble loss from Flacco. They had a total of three turnovers in the first half. They only scored 10 points and had a total of 282 yards but they stayed on the field, thanks to Jets penalties. Ravens dominated the time of possession, 38:32 to 21:28. Todd Heap and Anquan Boldin were the major bright spots on offense. Heap had six receptions for 72 yards, five of those lead to first down. Boldin had seven receptions for 110 yards. Ravens were 11 of 19 on third down. That’s good against this Jets defense. On the Ravens touchdown drive, Jets committed three penalties for 32 yards. One of them on fourth-and-one where Braylon Edwards ran into the kicker and kept the Ravens drive alive which lead to McGahee’s one yard touchdown.
You cant ask for a better defensive performance then the Ravens had on Monday night. They only gave up six first downs, one third down conversion on 11 tries and a total of 60 passing yards for the entire game. They only allowed the Jets to run 44 offensive plays. Ravens had a great goal line stand on short field due to the sack-fumble on Flacco. They only gave up a field goal on that drive. Ravens defense responded to the other turnovers as well. They gave up zero points on the next two turnovers, McGahee fumble and Flacco interception, and created their own turnover recovering Shonn Greene’s fumble. They only gave up nine points, all on field goals, and physically dominated the Jets offense.
Special Teams: C
Overall, the special team played OK. Ravens gave up a 32 yard punt return to Leonhard which lead to a field goal for the Jets. When points are hard to come by in a game like this, you cant let your opponent have a short field to get easy points. Tom Zibikowski had a poor game and almost cost the Ravens the game. He fielded a punt at he’s on five yard line and tried to make a play. Well, he didn’t. He lost four yards and almost gave up the easy safety. On he’s way down of being tackled, he lost the football and Jets recovered in the end zone. Good news for the Ravens was that he’s knee was clearly down before the ball came out.
John Harbaugh knew what the Jets wanted to do because Rex Ryan use to be defensive coordinator for the Ravens. The thing is, Ravens know how to do it better. Of course there is a couple of play calls where you have to scratch your head. Like when they call QB sneak to only gain half a yard at there own end zone. However, Ravens were dialing up all kinds of zone blitzes to confuse Mark Sanchez. The Jets were forced to check down the ball more then you wanted to and the Ravens made sure they tackled.
