When and Where: 12 p.m. Saturday at Michie Stadium
Series History: 3-0 Army including a 17-13 win last season.
Matchup: Army faces another passing offense this week, but not quite as speedy as what Hawai’i had to offer last Saturday. Army figured out how to stop the Warriors in the second half, effectively shutting down their high-powered aerial attack. With Mean Green starting quarterback Nathan Tune out due to injury, Army should be able to have their way defensively. Backup Derek Thompson will step in for Tune. Defensively North Texas has ranked near the bottom of the country, so look for Army to find success on the ground for the third week in a row. Coach Ellerson has talked about the offense needing one more play, so look for a new wrinkle offensively.
Player to Watch: QB Trent Steelman. Though Army was able to move the ball fairly well with Max Jenkins in at quarterback, Steelman is a leader on this team and was the catalyst for Army’s scoring drives last week. Jenkins scored a touchdown from the one-yard line the play after Steelman left due to injury. Steelman is expected to start and will be counted on to make this offense work.
Potential X-Factor: WR/QB Riley Dodge. The son of North Texas Head Coach Todd Dodge, Riley played quarterback last season before moving to wide receiver in the offseason. He has been used in Wildcat formations as well this year. With starter Nathan Tune out, look for more Wildcat to be used and Dodge to handle the football more often.
Prediction: Army has had a practice run for a pass-heavy offense already. The Hawai’i offense is more explosive than this Mean Green team and Army was able to work out the kinks at full speed last week. The Mean Green defense has not been anything special so far. Look for Army to play well on both sides of the ball and come away with a fairly comfortable win.
Army 27, North Texas 14
