Wisconsin can’t wait to see Arizona State in Badger country this weekend. You see Wisconsin has a bit of a bone to pick with ASU QB Steven Threet. Two years ago, Threet helped Michigan produce the largest comeback in Michigan Stadium history…against the Wisconsin Badgers. The Badgers lost a 19-0 halftime lead and went on to lose the game 27-25. Threet was a masterful beast against the Badgers in the second half.
Now Threet has one more chance to stick it to the Badgers. Or, the Badgers have a chance to avenge the terrible second half debacle by the 2008 team. ASU of course is hoping Threet can perform some of that same old magic for them.
But ASU is quite aware this is a very different game than the one played back in 2008. First, Wisconsin was the visiting team in 2008 while at Michigan Stadium. This time the game is at home for them while also boasting a stellar ranking. Second, though this is Wisconsin’s toughest threat so far, the Badgers are looking to prove that their struggles versus San Joes State were merely a fluke.
Thus ASU definitely will have to play much better than they did last week against Northern Arizona University.
This week ASU’s defense is going to have to play like the #1 ranked Pac-10 defense that they were last season. Wisconsin plays a tough power run game so the focus will be on the front four and the linebacking core. Luckily ASU is coming in as the 7th ranked rushing defense in the nation. But Coach Dennis Erickson still wants to see more from his defense this Saturday. He understands that the Badgers lead running back John Clay is a big boy and a gang tackle mentality is the only way ASU will have a real chance at bringing him down.
ASU will also need to limit the number of penalties they incur while on the field. In the first two games, they were penalized heavily, with 13 in last week’s game alone.
This should be a good test for both teams which will make it an amazing game to watch.
