Cotton, CMU, Runs Over Eastern

Paris Cotton had a career day in CMU’s 52-14 win over Eastern Michigan, running the ball 20 times for 196 yards and 3 scores, he also caught three balls for 37 yards. However, it could have been better, since Cotton also had two fumbles, though one was recovered by CMU, the one he lost was on the 3 yard line as he was about to score. Still Cotton had a great game and he was the key factor in CMU’s easy conference win. Zurlon Tipton playing in his first game of the year after a two game suspension for a violation of team rules also had 11 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown as it was clear that CMU wanted to run the ball better against Eastern then they have so far this season.

Ryan Radcliff also had a nice day throwing the ball for CMU finishing 15 for 23 for 255 and 2 scores.  CMU defense also got in to the act as they have a fumble return for a touchdown. Eastern did hang around for awhile, as it was only 21-7 CMU at halftime, but the second half belong to the visiting Chippewas’ giving Eastern their 15th loss in a row. It doesn’t get easier for EMU next week, they go on the road to play Ohio State… ouch.

CMU will also go on the road to play a big ten team as they travel to play Northwestern. CMU beat a big ten team on the road last year, Michigan State, but this years team is not last years team. The biggest thing for CMU in the Northwestern game is keeping people healthy. Of course you want to win the game, and you go there to try to win the game, but you do not risk someone getting hurt to get a win that really doesn’t matter. CMU’s focus needs to be on continuing to get better and try to win the MAC west, and get back to the MAC title game, where they will most likely get a rematch with Temple.

One problem that is solved for CMU, at least for now, is their kicking game. Walk-on David Harmon hit a 41 yarder today, to go to 2 for 2 in field goals in his career and he also hit on all 7 of his PATs. Paul Mudgett, the true freshmen starter, going in to the year may have lost the job for now, but I believe he will still have a long career helping CMU.

All and all a very good win for CMU and head coach Dan Enos, getting his first conference win. Nick Bellore did play in the game, but it is clear that he is not 100% yet, I would not play him much against Northwestern unless he is. Cody Wilson also hurt what looked to be his ankle in the game, but it didn’t look too bad, and I am sure he will be fine. After one more road game next week, CMU will return home October 2nd vs Ball State.
