Stampeders Drop A Wild One In OT

The Saskatchewan Roughriders handed the Calgary Stampeders a 43-37 loss in overtime last night at Mosaic Stadium in Regina in what was the best game of the year in the CFL since the season opened between the Riders and Alouettes. this game featured multiple lead changes, a ton on offense on both sides, and a couple of downright terrible coaching decisions by both teams.

The game started well for the Stampeders as on the opening drive for the Riders QB Darian Durant’s struggles continued as he threw a pick 6 INT right to Calgary DB Milton Collins to give the Stampeders a quick 7-0 lead. K Rob Maver added a FG to give the Stamps a 10-0 lead after the first quarter. It pretty much went all downhill from there for the Stampeders vaunted defense.

the second quarter was quiet until the last 5 minutes as the Riders scored on a nice drive capped off by a Wes Cates 7 yard TD run. After a short unproductive Stampeders possession the Riders may have found the chink in the Stampeders defenses armor. Darian Durant hit WR Weston Dressler for a 77 yard touchdown strike in which the Stamps DB was looking for an INT instead of the man. In the matter of a few minutes the Riders wereup 16-10. The Stampeders immediately responded with a drive of their own leading to backup QB Drew Tate scoring a 1 yard TD run, the Stamps got the ball back quickly and Maver added a FG at the end of the half giving Calgary a 20-16 lead.

The third quarter was fairly quiet as neither offense could get much going until the last few minutes when the Stamps and Riders swapped 30 yard touchdowns making the score 27-23 Stampeders heading into the final frame. Now things got weird!

Early in the fourth quarter the Riders put up three points on a Luca Congi field goal cutting the Stamps lead to one. Calgary immediately drove right back down the Riders throat scoring on a Joffrey Reynolds 4 yard TD and followed that up soon after with Rob Maver’s third FG of the evening give the Stamps a 37-26 lead with just under eight minutes to play! Saskatchewan QB Darian Durant had been lighting up the Stampeders secondary all game and hit another deep route connecting with Andy Fantuz on a 60 yard TD strike and followed it up with a successful two point convert to cut the lead to three. The Riders forced a quick two and out from the Stamps and got the ball back and proceeded to march again setting up a game tying 44 yard field goal from Congi. The score was tied at 37 with two minutes to play.

Calgary offense got stuffed again for another three and out. And once again on a 2nd and 3 the Stampeders tried to run the ball which got stuffed for at least the fifth time that game. So the Riders got the ball back with plenty of time. Durant moved the Riders down the field effortlessly again and they were setup for the winning 35 yard field goal try with no time left on the clock. The Stampeders of course called a time out to freeze the kicker but instead froze Saskatchewan head coach Ken Miller’s brain! He called back the FG team and sent out the punt unit to try and kick it through the endzone for a single! The Stampeders Deon Murphy caught the punt about 12 yards deep in the endzone and easily ran it out to avoid giving up the single. At that point the entire city of Regina was in shock and you could see the Roughriders players were furious at their head coach. So off to overtime!

The Stamps had one the tossed and elected to go second. The Riders stepped on to the field and two plays later Wes Cates had his second rush TD of the game however the Riders failed to convert the two pointer and were up six. On the Stampeders possession they were down to 3rd and goal on the Riders 3 yard line. Henry Burris rolled to his right and had Nik Lewis open for the tying score but Lewis tripped on the invisible man and the ball sailed by. The Riders winning the game 43-37 to go to 7-4 while the Stampeders fell to 9-2.

Both teams offenses and O-Lines were very good all game and check some of these numbers out…

SASK
QB Darian Durant 23/39 500 yards 2 TD’s 1 INT (also ran for 69 yards!)
WR Andy Fantuz 10 catches for 255 yards and 1 TD.

CGY
QB Henry Burris 29/40 348 yards 1 TD
Ken-Yon Rambo 6 catches for 115 yards.

The Stampeders now prepare for their next game against the suddenly surging BC Lions next Saturday at McMahon Stadium. Calgary must address the issue with the secondary as the top defense in the league looked pitiful against the Riders.

Have a good one!
