I’m an optimistic kind of girl. I almost always like to see the bright side of things, even when disappointment could set in. And I had to do the very same thing after watching ASU in its loss to the Wisconsin Badgers. Even though ASU wasn’t able to pull out the win, I reminded myself of the amazing play from the Sun Devils that I saw. This was the type of game that last year’s ASU team would have lost…badly. And though they lost yesterday afternoon they played with heart and kept a very good Wisconsin team within their crosshairs with great play from the defense and special teams.
Early on it was easy to see this was going to be a good game to watch as the Sun Devils special team’s speed and fluidity were on display. On five kick returns the Devils scored a TD, almost scored a couple more, and amassed 261 yards, with two of the returners each finishing with 120 kick return yards. These Devils came to play and were not going to be intimated by a #11 ranking.
Defense put in good work throughout much of the game holding Wisconsin’s big back John Clay down for much of the first half. And though he ended with over 100 yards, this wasn’t the hard-nosed runners typical game. Many of his yards didn’t come until the fourth quarter when ASU’s D had begun to tire and falter a bit.
Though special teams put on a show, the most impressive, and optimistic, part of the game for me was the play of the ASU offense. The Pac-10 is known for its passing offenses, however yesterday it was the running game of ASU that was on display. They rushed for 169 yards with 6.0 yards per carry. ASU hasn’t had a good running back in years, but the rushing of Deantre Lewis definitely gives Sun Devil fans something in which they can look forward.
Don’t get me wrong…ASU did lose yesterday for a reason. They played one of the best teams in the nation and they have a very young team. However I saw a lot of promise yesterday and I think by this time next season the Sun Devils will be a team to watch.
