Nebraska offense explodes in win

There was no doubt that freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez was ready for his road debut, especially in the environment in Seattle. He was more than ready. After proving himself at home, Martinez showed why he deserved to start all along among the Cornhuskers quarterbacks. Nebraska got off to a quick start with two touchdowns in just the first five offensive plays of the game. Taylor Martinez needed to complete only seven passes. That takes a lot of pressure of a young QB.

He had his legs do most of the talking. Martinez has really developed into a nice quarterback who can pass when he needs to, but will use his athleticism to gain yards. The line is creating some gaps, and it’s a bonus when the defense breaks contain. But I don’t know how long Martinez can keep this up. If he does this against some of the Big 12 defenses, he might be a dark horse candidate for a post-season award. This ground attack, with Roy Helu and Rex Burkhead, is posing a dangerous threat in the Big 12. All three had 100+ rushing yards on the day.

Let’s give the defense some love here. I love how this defense has taken on this role as an integral playmaker defense. They have already taken three (yes three…) touchdowns back for six points. Some teams wish they could do that in a single season. Also, the defense might have just ruined Jake Locker’s Heisman chances. In the past, I’ve seen Nebraska play more of a wait type of defense. They have been through some bad defensive possessions where they looked lost earlier in the season. But this defense is coming together quite nicely since Carl Pelini took over in 2008 as the defensive coordinator. Who doesn’t like a defense creating turnovers?!

One thing to improve on for next time would be some of the penalties. This just ruins momentum and stalls drives when you have a quarterback who seems to be unstoppable. Nevertheless, the Cornhuskers move to 3-0 with a 56-21 victory over Washington. Up next for No. 8 Nebraska Cornhuskers is South Dakota State at home.
