PSU Shuts Out Kent State

Penn State earned its 41st shutout under Joe Paterno, and its 500th win with him on the coaching staff in defeating Kent State, 24-0.
The good news is that Nittany Lions gained 162 yards on the ground against the nation’s No. 1 ranked rushing defense. Quite a switch from the dismal performance at Alabama the week before.
Evan Royster reached the 3,000-yard mark, the sixth player to do so in PSU’s history. Overall, though, his performance was nothing to write home about. He gained 38 yards on 11 carries. Royster is 371 yards shy all-time leading rusher Curt Warner’s mark of 3,398 but gaining fewer than 40 yards a game is not going to get him there quickly.
Rob Bolden had a strong game, and even exhibited some rushing skills. He threw for one TD and ran for another. He was 17 of 27 for 217 yards, making him the first Nittany Lions true freshman QB with multiple 200-yard performances in the program’s history. This bodes well.
Next up is Temple. The Owls are 3-0 for the first time since 1979. More on them later.
