Cardinals smack Pads, again

The Padres were obviously hoping things would go differently while in St. Louis. The Cardinals were not playing well of late and the Padres were hoping they could take advantage of it, in a huge four game series. The Cardinals roughed up the Padres pitching for the most part and ripped the cover off the ball against Latos on Friday. The Cardinals scored 14 runs on 19 hits and knocked Latos out of the game after throwing only 1.1 innings. Latos has had back to back poor outings. His stuff is still there, throwing mid to high nineties and a sharp breaking ball. His location also looked good against the Cardinals with a lot of their hits coming off his fastball on the outer third of the plate. With this being said,I think what is going wrong for Latos in his last two starts is the movement on his fastball is not there, his pitches seem to be a little flat. Also I think some teams have figured out that he throws most of his pitches away and they are diving over the plate, reaching out and going after his fastball in hitters counts. I would like to see him throw a few pitches up and in, so the hitters can’t get comfortable up at the plate. The dreaded Cardinals strike again after getting swept by the Cubs early in the week the Cardinals looked like a totally different team against the Pads, of course. Chris Young made his second start of the year since April 6th. In the only win of the series Young pitched well for four innings on a small pitch count. Young was effective but not very sharp, giving up three hits and three walks in the four innings. Young has never been much of a control pitcher so this is no surprise but it is risky pitching with so many runners on base. It will be interesting to see if Young stays in the rotation and for how long. Luebke only had one quality start in his three chances so I think the Pads will stick with Young for a few more starts. Ryan Ludwick had a huge game on Saturday going 2-4 with three RBI against his old team. Ludwick had his first real big hit for the Padres hitting a three run home run in the 9th to help the Padres go up 8-4. I’m sure it was an enjoyable moment for Ludwick, who also got a standing ovation in his first at bat back in St. Louis.
The Padres are now in second place trailing the Giants by a .5 a game and the Rockies are in third, 1.5 games out. What a race we have in the N.L. West with every game from here on out having huge playoff implications. There will be a lot of scoreboard watching going on over the next two weeks. When your team is in second place the next thing you start to look at is the wild card race. The Braves lead the wild card race by 2.5 games over the Padres. The Braves have been playing very well and look to have the wild card spot wrapped up right now. Things can change but for Padres fans winning the division would seem like a more likely way for the team to get into the playoffs, especially since we are playing the division leader three more times before the season ends. Coming up next for our ball club is going up to L.A. to play the Dodgers in a three game series. Lets hope the Padres can sweep them up in L.A. like we did down here just two weeks ago.
Side note- I am in the championship game in both of my fantasy baseball leagues, looking to bring home two gold trophies.
Remember all you fantasy studs out there, nothing is sexier to a woman then a fantasy championship!
