Notre Dame Football – Monday Links

Everyone ok? If you read my 1002 word stream of consciousness soliloquy when you woke up yesterday, you know I was feeling resigned to what appears to be a fate filled with wacky disappointments. Thinking about it yesterday, I began to get more and more angry. The missed opportunity was incredible.

Imagine if this team had won one of the last 2. A) They’d be 2-1.  B) They’d be ranked.

If the last 3 combined minutes had gone just a little bit differently and they had won both? Can you say top 20? Can you say Sports Illustrated article this week? This reality was insanely close and it’s only Kelly’s third game. I think it’s important to realize that before we start a conversation about how Notre Dame will never be relevant again….(looking at you, ESPN’s Robert Smith)

On to the links….

First this..should the fake have counted – ndnation.com [1]

Sidebar: Thanks to Kevin Lee for pointing this out to be Saturday night. I really don’t know what to think of it. The rule technically allows for a second to pass between the   hitting :00 and the snap. If the ball is snapped during that mysterious .9 of a second window, delay of game won’t be called.  That’s the most likely scenario.

Notre Dame fans are grasping for answers as to how this team is 1-2, gotta love them - South Bend Tribune [2]

Losing close ones, it’s what Notre Dame does- AP [3]

How the fake came to be – Detroit Free Press [4]

Side bar: This is actually really interesting, if you can stomach it. The part that has to bother you is that Kelly knew MSU had a fake in the playbook. However, without getting too defensive, I don’t think you’re looking for a fake in that situation. It’s far too risky a play. Because it worked, it’s being praised. But that doesn’t mean it’s a smart call. Risky? Yes.  Bold? Absolutely. Gutsy? No doubt.  Smart? No way!

However, Kelly’s got the right idea about this loss - Chicago Tribune [5]

Side bar: He’s right. They were seconds away from 2-1, 3-0 even, but that doesn’t mean anything. Michigan and Michigan State made one more play than they did (Michigan made a few more) and, at the end of the day, that’s not a good thing. 1-2 is 1-2 is 1-2.

But it is fun to think about what might have been – CBS Sports [6]

Side bar: We share Kelly’s sentiments about Mark Dantonio. No one deserves that fate ever, but especially after such a great win. Hope for a speedy recovery. Sometimes life just isn’t fair.

This day in Irish history – 1980

In one of the most dramatic moments in college football history, Harry Oliver boots a 51-yard field goal that sneaks over the crossbar by inches as time runs out, giving Notre Dame an incredible 29-27 victory over Michigan. Oliver is immediately engulfed beneath a pile of green-clad players and fans alike, as Notre Dame Stadium erupts in perhaps the wildest celebration ever. “This could only happen here,” Irish defensive tackle Pat Kramer says.- irishlegends.com

Enjoy Monday. 5 Days Until Stanford.
