Souray for Commodore rumours persist

The Oilers and Blue Jackets are reportedly talking about a possible deal that would ship disgruntled Edmonton blueliner, Sheldon Souray, to Columbus for Edmonton-area-born NHLer, Mike Commodore.

Commodore had a disappointing season in 2009-10, contributing only 11 points (2-9) along with 62 PIMs. The Ft. Saskatchewan, Alberta native has three years left on a contract with Columbus that will see him earn $3.8M, $3.5M and $3.35M respectively.

Souray has $9M remaining over the next two seasons, which means Edmonton would free up additional cap space, but would inherit more salary over the length of Commodore’s contract.

Edmonton would sacrifice one of the NHL’s most lethal shots in Souray, while gaining toughness on the blue line from the 6′, 4″, 225-pound Commodore.

The deal is only speculation at this point, though Columbus GM Scott Hewson, a former member of the Oilers’ front office, seemingly has Edmonton on speed dial from previous trade talks.

Oilers’ GM Steve Tambellini may also elect to simply send Souray down to the team’s Oklahoma City for the purpose of recalling him through waivers, at which time another team could pluck him off the waiver wire making the Oilers responsible for half of his remaining salary.

This may very well be the most viable option for the Oilers, who along with Souray, have painted themselves into yet another unfortunate corner.

Cuts Coming
The first round of player cuts are expected following day four of training camp at Rexall Place.

In the meantime Oiler fans, chins up….sticks down
