As Week Two Closes Out, Vikings Are Looking Up At Entire NFL

Frustration. That is the word that came to mind while watching the week two contest between the Vikings and visiting Miami Dolphins on Sunday. On Monday, that same emotion continued to drive every thought related to the state of the Minnesota Vikings as they stumble through the beginning of this, their 50th season. This team has gone from being within a blink of the Super Bowl, to within a blink of being irrelevant. If Sunday was indicative of how Minnesota is going to play the rest of the season, the outlook is bleak.
Obviously not a ton of positive stuff happened in this game, but there were a few things on the field that were promising. Adrian Peterson was an absolute beast. He appeared faster, stronger, and more focused than anyone on either team and he continued to do a good job of protecting the ball. For the second week in a row, the Viking defense held their opponent to 14 points. Normally that would seem like a stat from a team starting 2-0, not 0-2, but the offense has been unable to score more than 10 points in either game. Finally, it was good to see Toby Gerhart make his NFL debut, even if it was a fairly small contribution.
There was a lot more bad stuff going on against the Dolphins and unfortunately Brett Favre was in the middle of most of it. Minnesota had four turnovers and they all involved the “silver fox”. For the first time as a Viking he is legitimately responsible for losing a game. I do not want to unduly pile on Mr. Favre, but as I told a friend during the preseason, something appears to be missing in terms of desire this year. The way he has been carrying himself just doesn’t inspire a great deal of confidence. I know that missing Sidney Rice is hurting his on the field performance, but Brett looks a little out of sync both on and off the field right now. It makes this writer wonder if the Viking quarterback proved what he wanted to prove last year and has just come back as a favor to his teammates. In fact, those words have actually come out of his own mouth during the last couple of weeks. There is no doubt that he enjoys playing in Minnesota much more than he did in New York, or even the last couple of years in Green Bay. The question right now is does he enjoy playing anywhere? If the losses mount up, will it suck the rest of his desire out? Nobody wants to see that. Of course, everybody counting Favre out could be just enough motivation to charge him up for another storybook finish. As he said in his post game press conference, Minnesota is basically looking at a 14 game schedule now. They have to win at least ten of those. What was unthinkable before the season is a reality now. The Vikings most important game of the year is week three against Detroit.
