Eagles to Start Vick Sunday Against Jacksonville (Until Further Notice?)

Michael Vick will start for the Eagles Sunday against Jacksonville. WHAT??? Yes you read that correctly.  Andy Reid has reversed field as quickly as Michael Vick did against Detroit. Vick, not Kevin Kolb, is now the Eagles’ starting quarterback. A poor first half against Green Bay – with a questionable game plan – a concussion and six sparking quarters from Vick is all it took for Kolb to lose his starting job.

Michael Vick was named starting quarterback for Sunday's game against Jacksonville, despite Kevin Kolb being cleared to play earlier in the week.

Immediately following Sunday’s win at Detroit and again on Monday, Reid insisted that Kolb was his starting quarterback. But a day later, he changed his mind, stating that the decision is due to Vick’s “acceleration” and “has nothing to do with” Kolb’s concussion.

[4]“I think his [Vick’s] play has even exceeded expectations over the last two weeks,” said Reid, who would not disclose how long Vick would remain the starter.

In his first start since the final game of the 2006 regular season, Vick led the Eagles to a 35-32 victory over Detroit, completing 21 of 34 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran seven times for 37 yards and was sacked six times – but he escaped several others.

Anointed the starter in April when the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Redskins, Kolb missed the Detroit game with a concussion suffered in the season-opening loss to Green Bay. In the first half against the Packers, Kolb struggled, completing only five of 10 passes for 24 yards. Vick started the second half and nearly pulled off a dramatic comeback, throwing for 175 yards and a TD and rushing for 103 yards on only 11 carries.

Nonetheless, shortly before the start of Sunday’s game, the Eagles announced Kolb had been cleared to play against Jacksonville and was the starter. Despite Vick’s success, the decision wasn’t a surprise; the Eagles had been grooming Kolb to be McNabb’s successor since they selected him with their first pick of the 2007 draft.

“He’ll be fine,” Reid said. “The future is bright for Kevin Kolb.”

But for Reid the immediate future is incandescent with Vick, who, if he can change direction as quickly as his head coach, could lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl. Asked if such an achievement was possible with Vick, Reid said simply:

Reid was unclear about his long term plans regarding Vick (who is playing on a 1-year contract) but reassured skeptical pundits that Kevin Kolb would undoubtedly be a successful NFL QB in the future. We should all feel free to interpret Reid’s terse and often cryptic style in any way that we wish!

Reid changed his mind after Vick's performance in Detroit

Trade rumors began almost immediately, which Reid did not deny or confirm. Sources have indicated that one of the teams that have called is the Cleveland Browns. Their GM, Tom Heckert, was previously in Philadelphia with Andy Reid so he knows Kevin Kolb very well. It is odd though that Cleveland seems to have a plethora of QB on the roster including Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace and Colt McCoy.

Anytime a quarterback like Kolb’s name is thrown around, you’re going to have some interested parties. There are a few teams in the NFL with QB questions who should be getting on the phone with the Eagles.

When asked on Tuesday about a possible Kolb trade, Reid said, “Listen, I can’t predict anything down that far, nobody in this league can do that.” There’s no word yet on what the Eagles true feelings are on trading Kolb. Publicly Reid has remained firm that Kolb has a role in the future with the Eagles.
