Notre Dame Football – Wednesday Links

Posted By Jordan Lauterbach On Sep 22 2010 @ 2:00 pm In Notre Dame | No Comments

I woke up to a fascinating email on my phone this morning.  It shed some statistical light on why Notre Dame has struggled so much in the early part of the season. Clearly, it’s not just bad luck. Here are some bullet points:

- Defensivly, Notre Dame has given up an average of 7.5 yards on first down. They have also allowed 15 “long gains” for 445 yards.

- Almost half of all offensive plays have gained two yards or less. This is not typical of a Brian Kelly spread offense. It also shows the amount of big plays Notre Dame has had. I’m no statistician, but would venture a guess that an offense that survives almost exclusively on big gains won’t win many games.

- Since 2008, the Irish are 7 -11 in games decided by two scores, 6 – 11 in games decided by a touchdown, and 2-5 in games decided by a field goal…It can’t be just bad luck.

Forget New Medowlands Stadium, the Irish are going to Dublin…in 2012- irishtimes.com    [2]

Sidebar: The article said that this year’s edition of ND/Navy will take place on October 2nd. That’s erroneous. It’s October 23rd…Regardless, I’m a little young to remember the 1996 game, so this will be very cool.

The Brian Kelly era resembles the Weis years – AP [5]

Sidebar: Of course similarities exist! At the end of the day, these are still Weis’ players. It takes more then three games to turn around a college program. To use a word that came up yesterday, I wouldn’t panic until these kind of things keep happening with a team full of Kelly recruits.

This day in Irish History – 1956

After a remarkable run of twenty-eight games over sixty-nine years, Notre Dame loses its first game ever in September – 19-13 at Southern Methodist. Previously, the Fighting Irish had gone 25-0-3 in games played in this month.- irishlegends.com

Wow, no losses in September. Must be nice.

Enjoy Wednesday. 3 days until Stanford.
