Week 4 Preview: Austin Peay @ Wisconsin

I told you in week 2 the game against San Jose State would be over by halftime and it should have been, but wasn’t.  This week I’m telling you the same thing, but this time, it WILL be over by halftime.  If the Badgers (3-0) don’t have this weeks contest against the Austin Peay Governors (2-1) all but finished by the break, just go ahead and throw away all of my preseason BCS bowl predictions for Bucky.

The Governors, members of the NCAA FCS and the Ohio Valley Conference will square off with the Badgers for the first time ever.  I’m looking, and wanting, two things for this game: a blowout and for the Badgers to stay healthy.  But, don’t expect Bret Bielema and Co. to treat this contest like an NFL preseason game.  Starters will be playing in the third quarter as the Badgers want to establish an offensive rhythm and get their Chris Borland-less defense ready for Big Ten play next weekend.

The Governors consider their offense a pro-spread offense but it’s not exactly what you think.  They average more rushing yards per game than yards through the air.  They have three players who have gone over 100 rushing yards on the year, lead by quarterback Ryan White with 290 yards.  Look for running backs Terrence Holt and Wesley Kitts to get the majority of the touches when the ball isn’t in White’s hands.

The defense has been a problem for the Governors thus far.  It’s going to be a match made in heaven for Badger running backs as the Governors give up 219 yards per game on the ground.  Look for a lot of ground-and-pound early from the Badgers and some play-action to open things up when they start putting 8 guys in the box to try and stop John Clay.

If you are wondering about Chris Borland, he is done for the year.  It’s a huge blow for the Badgers defense as he was being counted on as one of the leaders along with J.J. Watt and Jay Valai.  Clearly Borland wasn’t fulled healed from off-season surgery and now the Badgers will apply for a medical redshirt in hopes that Borland will retain three more years of eligibility.

Don’t be surprised if….

*You see more of James White than Montee Ball.  White has been impressive so far while Ball still hasn’t taken that step forward to be Clay’s backup.

*Nick Toon doesn’t play.  He is still nursing his turf toe injury he suffered in week 1 and the Badgers need him 100% going into Michigan State.

*Ricky Wagner gets more snaps at right tackle than Josh Oglesby again.  Oglesby’s knee is still not back to where the coaches would like it to be and were impressed with the play of Wagner against Arizona State.

My Prediction:  Wisconsin 44  Austin Peay 10
