I really like the Padres chances of making it into the playoffs, let me tell you why. Now a month ago everyone liked the Padres chances when they seemed to be sailing into the playoffs, but now they are in a four team dog fight to either win the division or the wild card. The Padres are 9-20 since August 26th but they are still in first place in the N.L. West and have been playing better as of late. The Padres lead the division over the Giants by .5 a game and are 3 games ahead of the Rockies. The Padres are only looking at the division right now but they are also tied for the lead in the wild card race, with the Braves. I really like our chances because hopefully the Padres can finish up the series against the Dodgers tonight with a sweep. We have Latos going up against Kuroda, the Padres hit Kuroda pretty well and I’m guessing Latos comes out of his two start funk tonight in L.A. Then the Padres head home for a three games series against the first place Reds and four game series against the Cubs. If the Reds lock up the division soon with their magic number being three, then they will most likely sit some of their starters in the series against the Pads. Now the Reds sitting players does not guarantee the Padres a victory, because the Reds will still be sending a player to the plate with a bat in his hands. The Reds lineup is a lot less threatening without the likes of Joey Votto and Scott Rolenin it. With four games against the Cubs following the Padres should certainly win at least two or three games out of the four in the Cubs series. Carlos Zambrano is throwing the ball very well for the Cubs, but they have been a very beatable team all season long. With all this being said lets IMAGINE that the Padres end the season going up North to San Francisco with a one game lead and a three game series to play. The Padres would only have to win one of three games and worst case scenario have a one game playoff to decide the N.L. West Champion. With the loser still having a chance at the wild card spot.
It doesn’t get any better then this, baseball being played with every game meaning something. Its been a while since the Padres fans have had this. So lets all enjoy it, root hard and Go Pads!
