NCSU vs. Ga Tech: What to Expect

Posted By Ellen McLawhorn On Sep 23 2010 @ 11:18 am In North Carolina State | No Comments

NCSU and Ga Tech meet on Saturday in Atlanta and this game is will televised. This should be a good game and the first the real test for the now 3-0 Wolfpack.

What to expect from Ga Tech

To win Ga Tech must contain State’s QB Russell Wilson. He clearly has the agility and speed to make big plays. Watch for Tech’s CBs Reese and Butler to be busy. If they can keep Wilson contained to limited tight lateral movements they have a good chance at wining this game. When Ga Tech played UNC last weekend, UNC QB T.J. Yates, who is less agile than Wilson, was still able to scramble. Yates had 8 yards total rushing, 9 yards on one scramble out of the pocket, and got out of one sack attempt. If Ga Tech stays in the man-to-man coverage they must follow through and stay with their man to advert Wilson from connecting on a long pass. If they don’t, they can expect to get burned on coverage several times during this game. One more note defensively, is star Izaan Cross, a sophomore DE, who was named ACC defensive lineman of the week for his performance against UNC. He should have another good showing. Tech must limit State’s possessions and grind it out offensively with long drives to get the points needed to beat State.

What to Expect from NCSU

State must be prepared for the triple-option spread on offense and 3-4 defense from Ga Tech. They have never faced these types of strategies since O’Brien took over the program at State.  Hopefully, they will be have an answer for these, if not, that will be apparent immediately. Probably a bigger test for the Pack will be to keep focus on what they do well and not believe the hype that comes along with being 3-0. This will be a very close contest if Russell Wilson can thrive outside the pocket. Look for Dean Haynes to start at RB, but expect Mustafa Greene and Curtis Underwood to get plenty of playing time. Defensively look for another great performance from Audie Cole, whose maturity on the field has cemented the Pack’s team this year. NCSU has a great opportunity to prove they are contenders for the ACC title with a win here.

  • Ga Tech has home field advantage and the crowd in Atlanta is always pumped, so they will be a factor.
  • Ga Tech has one of the top rushing teams in the nation so they will put up good numbers.
  • NCSU Linebackers Coach Jon Tenuta will have his defense prepared. He is known for his meticulous preparations of opponents.
  • State’s defense will give up some big plays, but these will be kept to a minimum.
  • State’s offense keeps turnovers low and the score close.

 Final Score:

GT       24

If State doesn’t hold on to the ball, look for Ga Tech to win by at least 10 point. So Pack, make sure you take the Super Glue!! You have to hold on to the ball to win. I have done the trip to Ga Tech and its lots of fun. The stadium in Atlanta is nice and their fans truly love college football. Go Pack! Bring it back to Raleigh undefeated.
