The First of Three At Home For The Bulls

USF (1-1 ) is back in action this Saturday at home against Western Kentucky. (0-3 ) Skip Holtz says he wants the Bulls to learn from the loss at Florida ( 38-14 ) two weeks ago. Overall Holtz was happy to see the Bulls stand “toe to toe” with the Gators at the swamp but those FIVE turnovers were hard to overcome, and he hopes his team learned a bigger lesson.
Not only is Western Kentucky winless in three games this year but they haven’t won a game since September 20th 2008 when they beat the Racers from Murray State. That’s 23 straight losses! Ouch. Western Kentucky has been outscored 150-59 in three games already this season. Another ouch! Western Kentucky did have early leads against Kentucky and Indiana but eventually got smoked in both games. In 13 previous games against BCS conference opponents going back to 2002, Western Kentucky has never scored more than 14 points. However this year, they have scored 28 and 21 against Kentucky and Indiana.
Going into that game against Florida, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the Bulls this season. I believe the Bulls showed the other teams in the Big East they will be a team to reckon with come conference time. Florida head coach Urban Meyer talked about the Bulls speed and how impressed he was with USF. I didn’t think they had much of a chance to win the Big East this year but from what I have seen from USF and from the other schools in the Big East, the Bulls should contend in the Big East this year. Skip Holtz took over a program that has talent with lots of speed! The Bulls could be the fastest team in the conference. Pittsburgh who I thought was the Big East favorite this year, lost their first game at Utah. West Virginia was another team I thought was much better than the Bulls this year, and West Virginia had to come from behind and win in OT against Marshall. So far my first impressions of the Big East is that the conference is weaker this year than last year. I don’t think we’ll see a Big East team crack the top ten in the polls this season. I think everyone would agree that among the BCS Conference’s, the Big East is by far the weakest. Before USF can think about conference play they must beat the cupcakes on their schedule first, such as Western Kentucky this Saturday and FAU the following Saturday. I like to call these next two games, glorified scrimmages.
Fun Fact: Western Kentucky’s head coach Willie Taggart becomes the first opponent to face the Bulls as a player and head coach. Taggart helped Western Kentucky become the first visiting team to win at Raymond James Stadium ( October 17th ) as the Hilltoppers beat the Bulls back in 1998 31-24. As an option quarterback, Taggart rushed for 206 yards and scored three touchdowns.
Prediction USF 50 Western Kentucky 13
Clearly the Bulls can name the score.
