Right Back Where They Started

The Yankees blew the chance to put some breathing room between them and the Rays this week by splitting a four game set in the Bronx, after winning the first two. A.J. Burnett unraveled after a rain delay and C.C. actually lost the final game, so New York leads Tampa by a mere .5 in the standings.

Now with nine games left in their schedule – two three-game sets against Boston at home and away and three in Toronto in the middle, the Yankees will have an uphill battle to hold on to the division lead. Meanwhile, the Rays have 10 games remaining, six of them at home against the hapless Mariners and O’s before a final four-game set at Kansas City.

The differences in their Web sites say it all. Tampa Bay is touting the magic number to reach the post-season (4 before Friday’s games). The Yankees’ Web site is silent on magic numbers. Let’s not kid ourselves. There’s shame in the Bronx.

Granted the Yankees have little to be embarrassed about – the Rays are just a very good team. But, in the 10451 you’re expected to win, and win BIG.

There is a minuscule chance that Boston could play the spoiler and make a late grab at a post-season spot. The Sox are 7.5 games out at the start of the weekend series.

Well fans, we’ll see. I think a lot rests on Friday night’s Beckett-Pettitte matchup. It shouldn’t be missed!
