Pac-10 Preview: Oregon vs Arizona State

This is a big weekend for ASU.  Against the nation’s leader in offense, Oregon, ASU has a chance to prove itself in a big way.  Don’t get me wrong; this game is far from a game the Sun Devils are expected to win.  Though this is a much different team than the last couple of seasons, Oregon is not only the top dog in the Pac-10 currently, they’re also one of the top teams in the entire nation.  They currently rank first in total yards and points scored.   Not to mention 2nd in rushing yards with an average of 380.7 rushing yards per game.  Yes you read that correctly…Oregon puts up an average of nearly 400 rushing yards per game.  That’s friggin’ ridiculous.  Bright side for ASU though is that they rank 14th in the nation for passing yards while Oregon ranks 56th.  I know that’s little solace when you see the rushing yards but hey must look at the opportunities.

This game is definitely the best opportunity for the ASU defense to shine.  Oregon will definitely put the ASU defense to the test but if they play as they have for they did in the first games of the season, they should be able to at least hold the run and stifle the pass.

The Devils were able to confuse Wisconsin’s offense much of last week but the offense must do better at converting stops and turnovers into points.  The offense needs to get back to how they played the first game where they moved the ball freely up and down the field.  Quarterback Steven Threet has the ability to jack it down the field…and he needs to do that against a team that has the ability to jack up the score with passes, but more importantly with the run.

The first Pac-10 game for both teams should be good to watch.  If Oregon keeps playing like they have been they can make a huge statement across the nation.  And if ASU plays as they have so far, and put everything together, they have the opportunity to keep improving and moving forward.
