Big Game, Bigger Win

Okay,  I got the outcome right, just the score a little off. My last post was Falcons by 3. I said New Orleans would score three times in the air and they did. I said the Falcons would score twice on the ground and once in the air – Ok they did not but they did run the ball really well. Snelling is a beast and Turner pounded the ball another great combo. This game was so up and down a tie at the half was just the beginning. The Falcons had a 11 minute drive to tie it just before the half. At the half they held the ball 20 minutes to New Orleans 10. Atlanta Field goal, New Orleans Touchdown and a Atlanta Touchdown had the Falcons up 24  – 21. Now the really hairy part. 4th and 2 and the Falcons decide to go for it. Now Atlanta had converted its other two 4th down tries so it seemed logical. If the Falcons make that the game was basically over. I commend Smith for going for it. All of us fans would be screaming at the tv if they had punted it. Sure it would have been the safe move but I love the fact that he went for it. Maybe next time they’ll convert. The failed conversion left the Saints in great position. Down the field they went and into OT we go. I watched this game in a bar and the guy next to me(a dolphins fan) was cheering as loud as I was when the Falcons won the coin toss. Fast forward to the Saints drive, first down and they are going for the field goal, it is up…..NO GOOD. Nearly fell off of my bar stool. Some hard ball control and smash football, thinking hold on to it please. Atlanta lines up for the field goal, I see it go up, the whole bar is silent(because it was the only real game worth watching at the time). As it is blocked I sink my head and then hear the whistle. Timeout they called a timeout. The Falcons line up – silence again – it is up and good, Falcons WIN! Sneak it out but a W is a W. As for the guy next to me, he said he was too tired from cheering that he might fall asleep watching the 8:30 game tonight.

I know it was a gift and before I go touting the Falcons to the playoffs, I will acknowledge that this was certainly the most entertaining game of the day. This does send a message that the Falcons know how to get IT done. The offense looked like a playoff team and the defense made some big plays when it counted. This team is well rounded from the coaching staff to the special teams.

It is funny that the Falcons still get no respect. ESPN, NBC, FOX all are asking the question, what is wrong with the Saints. I’ll tell you what was wrong today, they lost. Plain and simple, The Falcons stayed in the game and went toe to toe with them. The Falcons had more takeaways, more yards and more time of possession and the best thing at the end of this game the Falcons had more points. The Saints were outplayed and over matched and were lucky to even be in the position to win the game. The Field goal went bad and they lost. But the Falcons had to march down the field and score – it wasn’t given to them. Give them a little respect please. 2-1 and tied atop the division.

GO FALCONS – now where did I put my anxiety medicine.
